Conquering Fear! - by Fiona Laing

Intro

I met the wonderful Fiona at an online network meeting…

From the word-go I felt such warmth towards her, because of her equally warm and gentle personality!

Since then we have chatted on Zoom, and I became aware of the great work she does as a hypnotherapist.

Fiona kindly agreed to share some advice on a topic with which I have struggled, myself: Anxiety!

So, without further ado… Here’s the article, and all the info you’ll need if you would like to find out more about Fiona’s work!

ABOUT FIONA

Clinical and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist. My specialist areas include working with anxiety and stress.

I help clients move forward in life, and take back control. “ Unlock the changes you want to make”.

It takes a night away to start to conquer the fear!

My daughter and I had a night away in a lovely hotel a few weeks ago for a wee bit of quality time together.

I was under strict instructions to bring my new MacBook- well it’s not exactly new as I purchased it at the end of last year!

Let’s just say it hasn’t been utilised the way it was intended!

Why?- because I’ve built up a fear about using it!

“What-ifs” by the barrowload

I heard myself saying: “You said you’d help me” “it’s so different” “why didn’t I stick to what I knew?

I kept ignoring the shiny gold rectangle and I put it in a drawer. Yep I know, how daft!

I can hear all you MacBook fans saying this was sacrilege!

I bought it as I felt it was the computer that would allow me to do more things and streamline processes in my business. The fact that John Lewis had it on offer was a big deciding factor! So many people had said they are amazing.

By ignoring it, is how fears and phobias develop.

They can breed, multiply and dominate as time passes.

By facing the discomfort and admitting to it is the first step to overcoming it. Some fears once externalised i.e. talked about, can dissipate quite quickly.

Some take longer but if you don’t deal with them they will continue to stop you doing what you want to do.

You will then make adaptations in your life to avoid dealing with it.

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist, working with fears and phobias is a frequent condition I help people work with to change.

The longer it goes on the more anxiety takes up residence and makes the fears bigger and stronger.

Hypnotherapy allows you to work through them to make the changes you want. To make any changes in life or try new things, challenges our comfort zone, a key area in life development.

If we don’t try new things or tackle existing worries or issues, our comfort zone will shrink and therefore so will our confidence around them.

Future opportunities become limited to us.

What happens then?

Anxiety becomes the dominant emotion which is not conducive to long term health and wellbeing.

It’s up to us to recognise when this is happening and to accept that action is required to stop it escalating.

I promise to keep you updated with Lady MacBook.

We are not best buddies yet but I do communicate with her on a daily basis ( well almost daily! ) She needs to earn her keep!

Have you had anything you kept putting off dealing with? If you have tackled it, how have you benefitted?
