Why Limit Your Imagination?

When it comes to portraits most people have a favourite style and, almost innevitably, will always choose one type of portrait over all others.

There is nothing wrong with knowing which style of photography you like and giving it preference, but faced with something completely different would you be prepared to take a leap and go for a change or would you simply choose the same style of images you have always gone for?

For example… Many parents will always prefer a whitewashed image of their child because they feel that it does not detract from the subject on the portrait, and it is more traditional.

Whereas that idea has merit, and the image is lovely, would you ever consider going for something completely different, if presented with a choice?

SEEING PORTRAITS DIFFERENTLY!

I always like to discuss styling of portrait sessions with my clients - Be it for adults, children or family portraits. This gives me a great insight into what I can do for them, and literally fires my imagination!

For the below images I asked mum about what her daughter enjoyed doing for fun, and reading was one of the activities she liked the most - I wanted to then incorporate this into the portraits, but also wanted to make the lighting a lot more expressive than simply to have her holding a book with a white background.

The result are images which I sincerely love, and that you can see below.

Would you consider having a portrait like one of the above on your walls? I certainly would!

I realise that this style of portraits would feel incredibly heavy on the eyes if you were not offered something brighter and I, of course, do offer clients a choice and a variety of looks - Not always with a white background, as if you look through my portfolio you will find that I never really use white backgrounds now, unless specifically asksed for that look.

So I would encourage you to not limit your imagination!

Next time you are over at my studio for a portrait consultation, let’s talk about how we can incorporate something a little bit different to your own or your child’s portrait session!
